Minnesota Required Teacher Licensure Exams

All teacher candidates seeking initial licensure in the state of Minnesota must now pass a series of exams in three areas. These include:

  • Basic Skills Tests
    • The Basic Skills requirement may be fulfilled by passing the Minnesota NES Essential Academic Skills Exam or by achieving particular scores in the Multi-State NES Essential Academic Skills, ACT Plus Writing, 1600 SAT, GRE, Praxis CORE, or GRE tests.
  • Pedagogy Tests
    • Options include Early Childhood Pedagogy, Elementary Pedagogy, and Secondary Pedagogy.
  • Content Area Tests
    • To be licensed in a particular Content Area, teachers must pass the corresponding MTLE Content Area Exam.
